US Mint Commemorative Coins
Commemorative Coins from the United States Mint
Commemorative coins made available by the US Mint are not minted for general circulation, although they are legal tender. All commemorative coins are minted in limited quantities and are only made availaable by the US Mint for a limited time. The Mint oftentimes releases commemorative coins in Proof (PF) and Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) selections. Commemorative coin designs are authorized by Congress and celebrate and honor American people, places, events and institutions. In addition to commemorating American ideals, history and culture, these coins help raise money for important causes, like the building of new museums, maintaining of national monuments, preservation of historical sites and more. These coins have been quite popular among collectors since the modern commemorative program began in 1982.
