The obverse (front) of the coin features a depiction of Lady Liberty, commonly referred to as "Miss Liberty" or "Anna Willess Williams." The design was created by George T. Morgan, who was an English-born engraver working for the U.S. Mint. Liberty is shown wearing a Phrygian cap, symbolizing freedom, and the date "1889" is located at the bottom. The reverse (back) of the coin displays an eagle with outstretched wings, holding arrows and an olive branch. Above the eagle is the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST," and a wreath surrounds the lower part of the design.  George T. Morgan, the designer of the Morgan Dollar series, was tasked with creating a new design for U.S. silver dollars. His design replaced the previous Seated Liberty design.
