The National Trust for Historic Preservation (The National Trust) commissioned Tiffany & Co. to prepare designs for the Dolley Madison Commemorative Silver Dollar. Tiffany & Co. donated the designs to the National Trust, which in turn provided both the obverse and reverse designs to the United States Mint for production of this exquisite coin. The obverse features a portrait of Dolley surrounded by gardenias. Dolley is seen against a background of a domed temple that covers the Madison-era ice-house, which can still be found on the grounds of Madison's Virginia home, Montpelier. The reverse features an elegant view of the portico of Montpelier, accentuated by graceful willows. *The Dolley Madison Silver Dollar bears the hallmark "T &Co", as a credit to Tiffany & Co. for the Design. United States Mint Sculptor/Engravers, T. James (Jim) Ferrell (obverse) and Thomas D. (Tom) Rogers (reverse) are responsible for translating the design art into a three dimensional sculpture from which the coin dies are produced. |
