2014 Proof Gold Buffalos – Collector's Version of the Popular Gold Buffalo Coins

Gold American Buffalo Proof Coin

Modern coins are designated as proof versions based on a specific manufacturing process that utilizes a specially treated die to strike the coin. This special die, combined with multiple strikes of the blank (2 or more), creates a mirror-like shine to the field area of the coin (the portion behind the raised main design elements). Proof versions of select coins, like the Gold Buffalo Coin, are produced by the United States Mint in order to offer higher-end collector’s editions of popular releases.

One of the most beloved designs ever released by the United States Mint is the American Buffalo designed by James Earle Fraser (a student of Augustus Saint-Gaudens). This classic buffalo design first appeared on the Type I Buffalo nickel in 1913. The design was next featured on a commemorative American Buffalo Silver Dollar in 2001. It was then selected to appear on the American Buffalo One Ounce Gold Coin in 2006 – which was the first 24-karat, 99.99% pure gold coin ever produced by the U.S. Mint. The U.S. Mint has released Gold Buffalo bullion coins every year since.

The Gold Buffalo coin’s design is based on the original Buffalo Nickel, with the obverse (front side) featuring the likeness of a Native American, believed to be based on one of three possible American Indians. The reverse (back side) depicts an American Bison, often referred to as a buffalo, hence the coin’s common name. The proof version of the Gold Buffalo coin is a gorgeous gold coin that makes a great addition to any numismatic collection.

The $50 face value gold coins (which measure 32.7mm diameter) are legal tender and are guaranteed in weight (31.108 grams), content (1 troy ounce of pure gold) and purity (99.99% pure) by the U.S. government. American Gold Buffalo bullion coins are among the purest gold coins in the world in terms of fineness and metal content, and by law the gold for the coins must originate from newly mined sources in America.

Inscriptions on the 2014 Proof W Gold Buffalo coin include LIBERTY, 2014 and a "W" mintmark on the obverse, and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM and IN GOD WE TRUST on the reverse. Also on the back you’ll find the coin’s legal tender value of $50 and the weight and purity of the coin 1OZ .9999 FINE GOLD inscribed just below the bison design.
