1928-S Peace Dollar VF-XF Condition
Add a later-date issue from the original Peace Dollar series to your collection with this 1928-S Peace Silver Dollar. Struck at the San Francisco Mint and offered in Very Fine to Extra Fine (VF-XF) condition, this historic U.S. silver dollar pairs Anthony de Francisci's celebrated design with the unmistakable character of a circulated coin from the 1920s.
The 1928-S was struck during the final year of the Peace Dollar's original 1921-1928 production run before the denomination briefly returned in 1934 and 1935. Composed of 90% silver and 10% copper, each Peace Dollar contains approximately 0.7734 troy ounce of silver and carries a $1 face value.
1928-S Peace Silver Dollar Design
OBVERSE: The obverse presents a left-facing portrait of Liberty wearing a radiant crown, with her windswept hair adding movement to the design. The inscriptions "LIBERTY" and "IN GOD WE TRVST" surround the portrait, while the date "1928" appears below. Designed by sculptor Anthony de Francisci, the portrait was modeled after his wife, Teresa de Francisci.
REVERSE: A bald eagle rests upon a mount while holding an olive branch, with rays extending upward behind it to evoke the promise of a new dawn. "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "E PLURIBUS UNUM," "ONE DOLLAR" and "PEACE" complete the design. The "S" mint mark, identifying production at the San Francisco Mint, appears on the reverse near the eagle's tail.
A Classic Peace Dollar in VF-XF Condition
Authorized in the aftermath of World War I, the Peace Dollar was created to symbolize the nation's hope for lasting peace. The series succeeded the Morgan Dollar and was originally issued from 1921 through 1928 before returning for two final years in 1934 and 1935. Its combination of American symbolism, substantial silver content and distinctive early 20th-century artistry has made the Peace Silver Dollar a lasting part of U.S. numismatic history.
This 1928-S Peace Dollar is offered in VF-XF condition, a range in which circulated wear is present while substantial elements of the original design remain visible. Because these are vintage circulated coins, the exact amount of wear, toning, coloration and other individual characteristics will vary. The coin received will be a 1928-S Peace Dollar meeting the stated condition range.
