Civil War Indian Cent Duo – 1864 Bronze and Copper-Nickel Indian Head Cents
The Civil War Indian Cent Duo includes two important transitional issues from the historic year of 1864: one 1864 Indian Head Cent Bronze and one 1864 Indian Head Cent Copper-Nickel, both offered in Good to Very Good (G/VG) Condition. Together, these coins showcase the major composition change that occurred during the American Civil War as the United States Mint transitioned away from the heavier copper-nickel alloy to the lighter bronze composition later that same year.
Designed by James B. Longacre, the Indian Head Cent remains one of the most collected and recognizable small cents in United States numismatic history. This two-coin set allows collectors to directly compare the appearance, weight, and coloration differences between the two 1864 compositions.
Historic 1864 Transitional Coinage Set
The 1864 Copper-Nickel Indian Cent was struck using the original alloy composition of 88% copper and 12% nickel and carried a reported mintage of 13,740,000 coins. Later in 1864, the Mint adopted the new bronze composition, producing the 1864 Bronze Indian Head Cent with a substantially larger mintage of 39,233,714 coins.
Because both varieties were produced during the same year, 1864 remains one of the most important transitional years within the Indian Head Cent series. Collectors frequently pursue both compositions to complete a proper Civil War era type set.
Classic Indian Head Cent Design
The obverse of each coin features Liberty wearing a Native American-style feathered headdress surrounded by the inscription “United States of America.” The reverse showcases the classic oak wreath surrounding the denomination “One Cent” beneath a Union shield.
These historic small cents circulated throughout one of the most significant periods in American history and remain highly collectible among both beginning and advanced numismatists.
G/VG Condition Examples
Both coins in this set are offered in Good to Very Good (G/VG) Condition and display moderate to heavy circulation wear consistent with age and commercial use. Dates, legends, and major design elements remain visible and identifiable.
Each set contains genuine over-160-year-old Civil War era Indian Head Cents and provides collectors with an affordable opportunity to own both 1864 composition types side-by-side.
