The Complete Copper-Nickel Cent Set (1857–1864) in G/VG Condition includes all 8 coins from this short-lived and historically significant composition era in U.S. coinage. Featuring both the Flying Eagle Cent and Indian Head Cent series, these coins were struck from a distinctive copper-nickel alloy (88% copper, 12% nickel), giving them their characteristic pale appearance.

Flying Eagle Cent (1857–1858)

The set begins with the Flying Eagle Cent, minted from 1857 to 1858. Designed by James B. Longacre, the obverse features a soaring eagle in flight, symbolizing strength and forward progress. The reverse displays a simple wreath encircling the denomination.

The Flying Eagle Cent marked the transition away from the large cent format to the smaller-sized cents still used today. Though short-lived, it remains one of the most popular early small cent designs among collectors.

Indian Head Cent – Copper-Nickel Era (1859–1864)

Following the Flying Eagle design, the Indian Head Cent debuted in 1859, also designed by Longacre. Early issues from 1859 through 1864 were struck in the same copper-nickel composition before transitioning to bronze later in 1864.

The obverse features Liberty wearing a Native American headdress, while the reverse evolved from a simple wreath (1859) to an oak wreath with shield (1860–1864). These early copper-nickel issues are thicker and heavier than later bronze Indian cents, making them a distinct and collectible subtype.

Copper-Nickel Composition (1857–1864)

All coins in this set are struck from a copper-nickel alloy (88% copper, 12% nickel). This composition was chosen for durability but proved difficult to strike, often resulting in weaker details and a lighter color compared to later bronze cents.

The short production window and unique metallic composition make these coins a highly collectible subset of early U.S. small cents.

G to VG Condition Explained

Coins in Good (G) condition show heavy wear from circulation, with major design elements still visible but lacking finer detail. The main outlines of the eagle or Liberty portrait remain identifiable, though much of the internal detail is worn smooth.

Very Good (VG) coins display more defined outlines and some visible internal detail. Key design elements such as lettering and wreath details are clearer, offering improved eye appeal while still reflecting honest circulation wear.

These circulated grades provide an affordable way to own a complete historic set while preserving the authentic character of coins that saw use in mid-19th century America.

Complete 8-Coin Set – A Key Early Small Cent Collection

This 8-coin set represents the full run of copper-nickel small cents from 1857 through 1864, bridging two iconic designs and a major transition in U.S. coinage.

Ideal for collectors building a type set or seeking a compact yet historically rich collection, this set offers early American coinage, unique composition, and strong collector appeal all in one complete grouping.
