1965 - 1967 United States Special Mint Sets

This lot includes the 1965, 1966, and 1967 United States Special Mint Sets (SMS), each housed in their Original Government Packaging (OGP). These sets were issued during a transitional period when the U.S. Mint temporarily suspended traditional Proof Sets and Uncirculated Sets due to rising coin demand and the nationwide coin shortage.

Each Special Mint Set contains five coins — cent, nickel, dime, quarter, and half dollar — struck with a finish finer than regular circulation strikes but not quite at proof level. Collectors prize these SMS issues as unique products of the mid-1960s, bridging the gap between Proof Set production in 1964 and its resumption in 1968.
