1856 Large Cent XF/AU Condition
The 1856 Braided Hair Large Cent in Extra Fine to About Uncirculated (XF/AU) condition represents one of the final issues in America’s long-running large cent series, struck just one year before the denomination was discontinued. Designed by James B. Longacre, the obverse features Liberty wearing a coronet inscribed with “LIBERTY,” her hair tied in a braid. In XF/AU condition, the design elements are crisp and well-defined—Liberty’s curls and coronet are sharp, with only minimal wear visible on the high points. The reverse showcases a finely detailed laurel wreath encircling the denomination “ONE CENT,” with the date “1856” boldly displayed below.
1856 Large Cent XF/AU Condition
This Philadelphia Mint issue had a relatively modest mintage compared to earlier years and is highly desirable in upper circulated grades due to its historical significance as a final-year type. With strong eye appeal, original surfaces, and minimal wear, this example bridges the gap between classic copper coinage and the emerging era of smaller cent pieces. Collectors value the 1856 large cent for its connection to a changing U.S. Mint and as a high-quality representation of the Braided Hair design.
