Evolution of a Denomination Series: Dollar Part 8

While wrapping up the dollar denomination, the last one might seem repetitive. However, with the popularity of the Morgan and Peace Silver Dollars even 100 years past their end and beginning, it was inevitable that anniversary coins were to come from the United States Mint.

1921 Silver Dollar Anniversary Coins (2021-Date)

The 100th anniversary of the end of the Morgan Silver Dollars and the beginning of the Peace Silver Dollars would be commemorated in 2021 with the passing of the 1921 Silver Dollar Coin Anniversary Act. The United States would go on to issue coins that “honor the originals with renditions of the designs used on the original Morgan and Peace silver dollar.”

There were six different anniversary coins minted, four of them honoring the Morgan dollar and two honoring the Peace dollar. Philadelphia and Denver both issued a Morgan and a Peace dollar while San Francisco would produce the 2021-S Morgan. To honor the mint facilities no longer, Philadelphia would mint Morgan dollars with the “CC” and “O” privy marks to represent Carson City and New Orleans.

While the Mint would announce plans to produce the coins annually with different finishes and mint marks, they would not go on to produce any products in 2022. However, this year would see the return of the Morgan and Peace Dollar with coins minted at Philadelphia and Denver. In addition, they are also releasing them with a Proof finish from San Francisco and in a two-coin Reverse Proof Set, a FIRST for the program.
