2023 (Philadelphia Minted - No Mint-Mark) Peace Silver Dollar NGC Mint State (MS)70 (FDI) First Day Issue Peace Dollar Label

The dollar of new design issued from December 1921 through 1235 was a commemorative peace coin. The Peace dollar was issued without congressional sanction, under the terms of the Pittman Act, which referred to the bullion and in no way affected the design. Anthony de Francisci, a medalist, designed this dollar. His monogram is located int he field of the under the neck of Liberty.

The new Peace Dollar was placed in circulation on January 3, 1922; 1,006,473 pieces had been struck in December 1921. The high relief of the 1921 design was found impractical for coinage and was modified to low or shallow relief in 1922, after 35,301 coins had been made and most of them melted at the mint. The rare Matte and Satin Finish Proofs of 1922 are of both the high-relief style of 1921 and the normal-relief style.

In December 1921, the Peace Dollar design was approved by Treasury Secretary Andrew Mellon, replacing the Morgan Dollar and marking peace between the U.S. and Germany. Designed by renowned Italian American Sculptor Anthony de Francisci (1887- 1964), the Peace Dollar symbolized the country’s coming of age as an international power, while recognizing the sacrifices made by its citizens in World War I and celebrating victory and peace. Reintroduced in 2021, the Peace Dollar has a beautiful uncirculated finish. The obverse (heads side) features Liberty in profile, a radiant crown on her head. Obverse inscriptions are “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and the year of issuance. The reverse (tails) depicts an eagle at rest holding an olive branch above the inscription “PEACE.” Additional inscriptions are “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” and “ONE DOLLAR.”
