The 50th Anniversary Kennedy Half-Dollar Silver Coin Collection commemorates the 1964 release of this iconic coin, minted in honor of the assassinated President. For the United States Mint, this tragedy added a new but sad chapter to the history of the half-dollar. In the days and weeks that followed the sudden death of President John Fitzerald Kennedy, officials at the bureau received numerous letters and telegrams suggesting that a con be struck in his honor. At the time, changing the designs on our circulating coinage was not nearly as common as it is today. To back up in time a bit, a coinage law enacted in 1890 had limited circulating coin redesigns during the first half of the 20th century to one or two changes every 25 years, as allegorical renditions of Liberty were replaced with portraits of American leaders whose service had earned them such high honor. Meanwhile, each of the leaders honored on our circulating coinage at that time had been deceased for at least 40 years before they were so honored.
