2017 United States Mint Set – Extremely Low Mintage Modern Issue
The 2017 United States Mint Set features standard uncirculated business-strike coins from both the Philadelphia and Denver Mints, housed in the familiar multi-panel Original Government Packaging (OGP). This year continues the America the Beautiful Quarters Program with ten quarters—five from each mint—honoring: Effigy Mounds (IA), Frederick Douglass (DC), Ozark Riverways (MO), Ellis Island (NJ), and George Rogers Clark (IN). According to the official Red Book, the 2017 Mint Set had a remarkably low mintage of just 286,813 sets, placing it among the scarcest Mint Sets issued in recent decades.
One of the most notable features of the 2017 Mint Set is the inclusion of the first—and only—Lincoln Cent bearing the “P” mintmark, released to celebrate the U.S. Mint’s 225th anniversary. This special cent appears in the Philadelphia folder and is unique to 2017. The set also includes uncirculated examples of the Jefferson Nickel, Roosevelt Dime, Kennedy Half Dollar, and the 2017 Native American Dollar featuring the “Sequoyah – Cherokee Syllabary” reverse. Beginning this year, Presidential Dollars were no longer included in Mint Sets following the conclusion of the series in 2016. All coins are preserved in Mint-issued cellophane within the folder-style packaging, showcasing bright luster, strong strikes, and clear mintmarks.
With its extremely low mintage, the one-year-only “P” mintmark Lincoln Cent, and the continuation of the ATB Quarters Program, the 2017 Mint Set stands as a highly desirable modern issue. Collectors completing Mint Set runs or focusing on significant moments in modern coinage history will find this set essential.
