1965 United States Special Mint Set – First Year of the SMS Series
The 1965 United States Special Mint Set (SMS) marks a major transition in modern U.S. coinage. Because the U.S. Mint suspended both Proof Sets and traditional Uncirculated Mint Sets from 1965–1967, these Special Mint Sets were issued as a substitute for collectors. Each 1965 SMS includes one coin of every denomination produced that year, struck with a higher-quality finish than standard circulation pieces but not to the fully mirrored standard of Proof coinage. A total of 2,360,000 Special Mint Sets were officially issued in 1965.
This inaugural SMS release contains the Lincoln Cent, Jefferson Nickel, Roosevelt Dime, Washington Quarter, and the 1965 Kennedy Half Dollar, the first half dollar struck with the new copper-nickel clad composition rather than traditional silver. These coins exhibit a distinctive satin-like appearance and sharper details compared to regular circulation strikes. Unlike earlier Mint Sets, SMS coins were produced using improved dies and quality controls unique to the three-year SMS program.
Housed in its original rigid plastic case with U.S. Mint lettering, the 1965 Special Mint Set offers collectors a clean, secure method of presentation with excellent long-term preservation. As the first set issued during the temporary suspension of Proof and Mint Sets, it holds strong historical significance and remains a cornerstone for collectors focusing on mid-1960s coinage or assembling complete SMS runs.
