2004 United States Mint Set – First Year of the Westward Journey Nickels
The 2004 United States Mint Set features uncirculated examples of every circulating denomination struck by the Philadelphia and Denver Mints. This year continues the momentum of the 50 State Quarters Program, offering ten State Quarters—five from each mint—honoring: Michigan, Florida, Texas, Iowa, and Wisconsin. Presented in its vibrant multi-panel Original Government Packaging (OGP), the 2004 Mint Set stands out as a key modern release. The official mintage was 842,507 sets, according to the official Red Book.
In addition to the State Quarters, the 2004 Mint Set includes uncirculated Lincoln Cents, Roosevelt Dimes, Washington Quarters, 2004 Kennedy Half Dollars, and the 2004-P and 2004-D Sacagawea Dollar. Most notably, 2004 marks the first year of the Westward Journey Nickel Series, and the Mint Set includes both redesigned nickels from each mint: the Peace Medal Nickel and the Keelboat Nickel. These coins commemorate the bicentennial of the Lewis & Clark Expedition and represent the first significant redesign of the Jefferson Nickel since its introduction in 1938. Collectors who want an expanded presentation of this historic redesign may also enjoy our 2004 Westward Journey Nickel Series Set. All coins arrive sealed in Mint-issued cellophane to preserve their sharp strikes, mintmark clarity, and bright uncirculated luster.
With its sub–one-million mintage, newly redesigned Westward Journey Nickels, and five popular State Quarter issues, the 2004 Mint Set is a central addition for modern collectors. As the first year of the multi-year nickel redesign, this set carries special historical significance and strong long-term collector appeal.
