Circulated Silver Mercury Dime Grab Bag 10 Piece Lot - (90% Silver Coinage)

Investing in Pre-1965 U.S. 90% silver coins is one of the easiest and most convenient ways to add to your portfolio. Sometimes referred to as junk silver, or scrap silver, these coins are anything but. Such terms in this instance refer only to the numismatic relevance of the coins rather than the quality of the coins themselves.

Production of the Mercury dime began in June 1916 after a public competition to redesign the three silver denominations being minted by the United States. The previous designs, created by Charles E. Barber, had been in play since 1892, each depicting the same obverse, which had become widely unpopular with the public. Several different concepts were submitted for review and the winner announced on March 3, 1916 by Mint Director Robert W. Woolley. After the announcement, winner Adolph Alexander Weinman, along with assistant engraver George T. Morgan, worked quickly to finish the design.

The obverse of the Mercury dime depicts a leftward facing Lady Liberty wearing a winged cap. The word "LIBERTY" circles the top half of the coin along with "IN GOD WE TRUST" on the bottom left and date on the right. This image, immediately mistaken for being that of the Roman god Mercury (often pictured with winged shoes or hat), is why these coins are now referred to as Mercury Dimes despite the misconception.

The reverse depicts the Roman fasces, carried by Roman officials as a symbol of authority. "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" haloes the top portion of the coin and the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM is set to the right of the fasces.
