The 250th anniversary of this dramatic early protest against taxation is celebrated by the 2022 American Revolution The Gaspee Affair 1 oz Silver Proof Colorized Coin. For at least a decade prior to the American Revolution, the tax demands of Britain and her incessant wars during the 18th century led to protests against the Crown in the Thirteen Colonies of America from at least a decade before the beginning of the War of Independence. When the HMS Gaspeemet its fate in 1772, it may have been harrying an anti-tax protest group called the Sons of Liberty. If so, its targets proved to be more popular than anticipated, as the group that burned the ship would entirely escape a royal commission sent to apprehend them.

The obverseof this coin features an engraving of the people of the Mesa Grande Sovereign Nation gathered under the boughs of an oak tree with the rays of the sun radiating from beyond. A banner carrying the band’s name is shown clasped in the talons of the bald eagle in the foreground, and the image is accompanied by the inscriptions “AMERICA” and “$1.” The colorized reverse then depicts high-relief engraving of the immolation of the HMS Gaspee along with the inscriptions “The Gaspee Affair” and “1772 – 2022.”
