Treasures of the United States: Kansas

Welcome to Kansas, nicknamed the Sunflower State as a reminder of the wild sunflowers that grow in profusion across the state. In 1822, the Santa Fe Trail brought hundreds of wagons through Kansas, and as the population grew, Kansas became a state in 1861. Cattle drives and railroads continued to change the face of the state, and Dodge City became home to the largest cattle market in the world, gaining notoriety in the process as the rough and tumbling home to the likes of Wyatt Earp, Wild Bill Hickok, and Bat Masterson.

For a few hundred million years prior to the exploits of Wyatt Earp and Co., Kansas had spent much of its time covered by a series of seas, some as shallow as 10 feet and others as deep as 300 feet. The seas, of course, rescinded and left behind chalk formations, deposited around 85 million years ago. As such, Kansas has been the source of some of the most spectacular fossil discoveries in US history and a large variety of coprolite findings. Coprolite is the scientific name for the fossilized excrement, feces or droppings of ancient animals!

Kansas lies in the center of “Tornado Alley” and has the most tornadoes per square mile of all of the states in the area. Kansas is also annually found in the top two wheat producing states in the US.

With a tiny mintage of just 500, this 1 troy ounce .999 fine silver coin features the patented "moving parts within a coin" technology, embedded within the silver coin is Coprolite, visible through a transparent capsule. This Treasures of the United States coin is struck in Proof quality and bears a denomination of $10 Legally authorized by the Mesa Grande Sovereign Nation.
