Treasures of the United States: Illinois

Welcome to Illinois, the Land of Lincoln, where a young Abraham started his political career. The state of Illinois was named after the Illinois River. The river was named by French explorer Robert Cavelier Sieur de La Salle in 1679 after the Native Americans he found living along the banks. Illinois is the French spelling for the Native American word “iliniwok,” meaning men or warriors.

For the first third of the 19th century, the fur trade was the economic mainstay of Chicago. Traders and travelers would pass through in their boats as a point of transit between the French and American settlements up and down the Mississippi Valley.

As part of a more than fifty-year-old Chicago custom, the Chicago River is dyed green in observance of St. Patrick’s Day. The tradition arose by accident when plumbers used fluorescein dye to trace sources of illegal pollution discharges. The dyeing of the river is still sponsored by the local plumbers union.

Fluorite is a colorful mineral with primarily ornamental uses. Many samples of fluorite exhibit fluorescence under ultraviolet light, a property that takes its name from fluorite. Fluorite is an important industrial mineral as it is used in the production of steel (as a flux or cleaning agent), to make hydrofluoric acid (for pottery, optics, and plastics), to make opalescent glass, and in enameling cookware. Illinois is the largest producer of fluorite in the United States and in 1965 fluorite was designated as the official state mineral of Illinois.
