Treasures of the United States: California

California’s long association with gold makes “The Golden State” a natural nickname. From the naming of the state in the 16th century to the California Gold Rush of 1848 and the fields of yellow poppies (official state flower) that bloom in the springtime, gold, in one form or another, has been intertwined with the history and development of California.

Prior to 1848, the population is estimated to have been around 8,000 people. Within 10 years of the gold rush it had spiked to 300,000 and hasn’t stopped since, standing at around 40 million people today. The state is also home to more than 70 indigenous languages with over 100 Federally recognized Native American tribes.

California has the largest economy of any state in the US and today ranks 5th from an international standpoint, having recently surpassed the United Kingdom. Half Dome is a granite dome at the eastern end of Yosemite Valley in Yosemite National Park. It is a well-known rock formation in the park, named for its distinct shape. One side is a sheer face while the other three sides are smooth and round, making it appear like a dome cut in half. The granite crest rises more than 4,737 feet above the valley floor.

With a tiny mintage of just 500, this 1 troy ounce .999 fine silver coin features the patented "moving parts within a coin" technology, embedded within the silver coin is 24K Gold Leaf, visible through a transparent capsule.
