1904 (Philadelphia - No Mint-Mark) $20 (Twenty Dollars) Gold Liberty Head Gold Coin Type III (3) Certified MS60 by PCGS in their First Generation Holders

Liberty Head $20 gold coins were minted from 1850-1907 (in 1849 a "pattern" was minted and resides in the Smithsonian's National Numismatic Collection) and were the first of the largest denomination of all regular United States issues authorized by the Act of March 3, 1849.  These Liberty Head $20 Gold Coins are also commonly referred to as Gold Double Eagles.

1904 $20 Liberty Head Gold Coin MS60

Liberty Head $20 gold coins were designed by James B. Longacre and weigh in at 33.436 grams with a composition of 90% gold and 10% copper (a net weight of .96750 ounces of pure gold). This larger denomination coin was ideal for converting the flood of California gold rush bullion into federal legal tender.

On the design of the obverse of the Liberty Head Gold coin features 13 stars circling around an image of 'Lady Liberty' with the word "LIBERTY" in her coronet/crown and the year-date of the coin below. The reverse is considered the "Type III" of Liberty Head Gold Coins because it is different from the original version since it features 1) the Motto "In God We Trust" and 2) has the denomination fully spelled out to be "Twenty Dollars". As with each version, the reverse features an eagle and shield design with the following words "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA", "E PLURIBUS UNUM" along with a blank mint-mark area which indicates it was minted a Phildelphia.

This $20 1904 Liberty Head Gold Coin will arrive in its original PCGS holder.

"Rattlers" PCGS Coin Holders Generation 1.0

PCGS has changed their holders over the years. The first generation graded coins were loosely graded, so they do have a potential of being upgraded.
