Australia Silver Kookaburra from the Perth Mint – Celebrating 25 Years

2015 Silver Kookaburra

The 2015 version of the Silver Kookaburra marks the 25th year that the silver coin has been minted by the Perth Mint in Australia. The Kookaburra coins are a signature product of the Perth Mint and are one of the most widely-collected modern world coins across the globe.

The inspiration for the silver coins, Kookaburras, are found in Australia and New Guinea and are the largest birds in the Tree Kingfishers family – growing up to 18 inches in length. Their beaks get up to 4 inches long, suiting their carnivorous lifestyle. They feed on a variety of large insects, earthworms, small reptiles and amphibians. Kookaburras, specifically Laughing Kookaburras, are best known for their unique calls, which sound like the echoing laughter of humans.

Kookaburra silver coins are popular with collectors for their high-quality annually-updated designs minted in 99.9% pure silver. The 2015 1oz Australia Silver Kookaburra depicts the bird in gorgeous detail – especially noticeable in the bird’s feathers and bill. There is also nice contrast between the matte finish of the background and the mirror-like shimmer of the bird. The overall design features the Kookaburra perched on a tree stump facing right, with a couple of varieties of foliage in the background.

In addition to the bird resting on the stump, the reverse of the 2015 Silver Kookaburra also includes inscriptions THE AUSTRALIAN KOOKABURRA 1OZ .999 SILVER and 1990-2015 (which represents the 25-year span that the coin has been minted). Also in recognition of the 25-year anniversary of the annual coin, the reverse includes a special 'P25' mintmark. The obverse of the coin features an effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, as is the case with all legal tender coinage form Australia currently produced. Inscribed on the front of the coin are ELIZABETH II, AUSTRALIA 2015 and 1 DOLLAR.
