American Buffalo High Relief Silver Coin from the Perth Mint – Another SilverTowne Exclusive!

SilverTowne Exclusive

The American Buffalo once roamed in enormous herds over the plains of Alaska, through Canada and the United States of America, to northern Mexico. Majestic buffalos are engrained into American culture nearly as deeply as bald eagles and, similar to eagles, have appeared many times throughout history on coinage, currency and stamps. A new coin, exclusively from SilverTowne, features the iconic buffalo in a unique close-up portrait view, highlighting in stunning detail the fur of this majestic animal as he gazes directly back at the viewer.

This new gorgeous high relief silver coin, designed by SilverTowne's own Michael Glass and minted by the Perth Mint, is issued as legal tender under the authority of the Government of Tuvalu. Along with the portrait of an American Buffalo, the coin's reverse also includes the inscription AMERICAN BUFFALO, the coin's weight of ONE OUNCE and the fineness of .999 SILVER. The coin's obverse depicts the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty QUEEN ELIZABETH II, the monetary denomination of 1 DOLLAR, the country name of TUVALU and the year 2014.

More about the American Buffalo from the coin’s Certificate of authenticity: "These massive, majestic looking animals have dark, chestnut brown hair, which is longer around their head, shoulders and chest, a pair of horns and a large shoulder hump. Ranging from six to six and a half feet tall and 10 to 12.5 feet long, the American Buffalo is surprisingly agile, reaching speeds of up to 65 kilometres per hour, and able to jump six feet high. Whilst they appear slow and clumsy, they are known for their unpredictable temperament, and will spring to action in seconds, often attacking without warning.

Historically, the American Buffalo played an essential role in the ecology of the North American Great Plains, grazing heavily on native grasses, disturbing the soil with their hooves and thus allowing many plant and animal species to flourish. The buffalo also had a profound economic impact on the Native American Indians. They helped sustain a way of life for these tribes, providing food, shelter, clothing, tools and ceremonial implements.

It is estimated that between 30 to 60 million buffalo roamed from Alaska to northern Mexico in 1800, part of the largest community of wild animals that the world has ever known. But by 1900 they had reached the brink of extinction, dwindling to less than 1,000 in number due to habitat loss, disease and unregulated hunting for meat, hides and sport. Today, approximately 500,000 American Buffalo live in North America, most of which are not genetically pure wild buffalo, having been cross-bred with cattle and raised as livestock over the past century. However, small populations of pure wild buffalo exist in protected areas such as the Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming, and the Wood Buffalo National Park in Canada."
