The obverse features the very recognizable Lady Liberty walking toward the sunrise, draped in stars and stripes, carrying branches of laurel and oak in her arms (reportedly representing civil and military glory). The Adolph A. Weinman design, known as Walking Liberty, was selected by the Secretary of the Treasury in 1986 to grace the front of the newly created Silver American Eagle coins. Inscriptions on the front of the 5oz replica include LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST and the year 2014.
Former United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver John Mercanti famously created the reverse design for the official Silver American Eagle coins, which is recreated on the reverse of the 5oz replica silver medallions - along with the word COPY added to the eagle’s shield (in order to comply with the Hobby Protection Act of 1973). This design features a heraldic bald eagle with a shield, sporting thirteen vertical stripes, in front of its chest. Thirteen stars appear in the field above the eagle’s head. The eagle grasps an olive branch in its right talon, arrows in its left talon, and a banner in its beak with E PLURIBUS UNUM engraved into it. Other inscriptions on the reverse include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, 5 TROY OZ and .999 FINE SILVER.
