The Royal Canadian Mint

From 1858-1907 all Canadian currency was struck soley by the Royal Mint in London. However, on January 2, 1908 Canada's first domestically produced coin, a fifty-cent piece, was struck at the Mint's Sussex Drive Facility (a Canadian branch to Britain Royal Mint). In 1911 the mint's gold refinery was officially opened and by the end of that year a record number of gold sovereigns had already been struck. The facility did not transform into a wholly Canadian Mint until 1931, when the Royal Canadian Mint was born.
