During the American Revolution, also known as the United States War of Independence, the historical Gadsden Flag was first flown by the United States naval commander in chief, Esek Hopkins on his ship, the USS Alfred. With its solid yellow background, the flag featured a coiled rattlesnake had become a common symbol of unity for the 13 American colonies,. Below the rattlesnake the motto, “Don’t Tread on Me” appears. The rattlesnake symbol itself was adapted from a 1754 political cartoon called “Join, or Die”, which was published by Benjamin Franklin in the Pennsylvania Gazette. Once the United States gained independence from Great Britain, the Stars and Stripes became the official national flag. After that, the Gadsden flag was all but forgotten for a time. In more recent years, the Gadsden flag has resurfaced in popular culture.

This .999 fine silver medallion honors the historical significance of the Gadsden flag regarding the independence of America. Containing the phrase “Don’t Tread on me” along with the coiled rattlesnake, the famous words of Patrick Henry are echoed in the phrase, “Liberty of Death”.
