The term "burnished" refers to the specialized minting process used to create these coins. Although they are similar in appearance to the ordinary Uncirculated (BU) Silver American Eagle Bullion Coins, the burnished coins can be distinguished by the addition of a 'W' mintmark on the reverse and the satin-like field behind the frosted features on the coin. Burnished SAEs are made expressly for collectors and still contain 1 troy ounce of .999 fine silver.
