John F. Kennedy Half Dollars

The coin that took an act of Congress to produce! After the tragic death of John F. Kennedy, the US Mint decided to enlist engraver Gilroy Roberts to design a coin with Kenndy’s image. After consulting with Mrs. Kennedy, who did not want her husband’s image to replace Washington’s on the quarter, it was decided to change the half dollar. The problem was that there was a law that the coin’s design (Franklin) had to be in circulation for 25 years and it had only been 15. The law was changed and the Kennedy half dollar has been a treasured keepsake since 1964.
