The White House, located at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW in Washington, D.C., is the official residence and workplace of the President of the United States. The White House was designed by Irish Born Architect James Hoban in the neoclassical style, construction began in 1792 and was completed in 1800. Originally being named "President's House" and/or "Executive Mansion." The first President to live in the White House was John Adams, the second President of the United States. He and his wife, moved into the unfinished building in 1800. Then in the war of 1812 British troops invaded Washington, D.C., and set fire to several government buildings, including the White House, in August of the year 1814. President James Madison and his Wife, had to evacuate the premises hastily. The White house was reconstructed and restored after the war. Over the Years it had many expansions and renovations into what it is now. The official residence and workplace of the President of the United States and continues to be a symbol of American democracy and leadership.
